Black Sherif Wins Big At The TGMA 2026

Black Sherif Is Ghana’s Artist of the Year, Again. Here Is Why It Was Never Really in Doubt
At the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards held on Friday, May 9, 2026, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, Black Sherif was crowned Artist of the Year — the second time in his career he has claimed Ghana’s most prestigious music honour.
This was not a surprise. It was a confirmation.
The artist beat stiff competition from Medikal, Stonebwoy, Wendy Shay, Sarkodie, and Diana Hamilton to claim the night’s biggest prize, and then kept collecting. By the time the ceremony was over, Black Sherif had secured a total of five awards, cementing his status as one of Ghana’s most influential contemporary artists.
This is the story of how one young man from Konongo, Ashanti Region, became the defining voice of his generation, and how one album made it impossible for anyone to argue against him.
The Full List of What He Won
Black Sherif claimed the night’s biggest prize, Artist of the Year, alongside Album of the Year for Iron Boy, Songwriter of the Year, Afropop Song of the Year for Sacrifice, and Hip-Hop Song of the Year for Where Dem Boys.
Five awards. One night. One artist. This is not a hot streak; this is a statement of total creative dominance.
Why Iron Boy Made This Inevitable
To understand why Black Sherif won, you have to understand what Iron Boy actually is. Released to global critical acclaim in 2024, it is not a conventional Ghanaian album. It is a confessional record — a brutal, emotionally precise account of survival, identity, and the psychological cost of fame arriving faster than maturity is ready for it.
Where his debut, The Villain I Never Was, was a declaration of arrival, Iron Boy is something harder and rarer: a reckoning. It asks what happens after the world notices you, when the outside story and the inside experience no longer match. Tracks like Sacrifice carry the weight of someone who has genuinely given something irreplaceable to be where he is. Where Dem Boys have the swagger, but even there, the confidence is earned rather than performed.

The album charted across Africa, the UK, and the United States. It earned him a sold-out Zaama Disco Concert at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in December 2025, drawing 30,000 fans in a single night. It made him a conversation in rooms that rarely include Ghanaian artists. And last night, it made him a two-time TGMA Artist of the Year, one of a very small group of artists in the award’s history to achieve the feat twice.
The Moment He Said It Best
Before the ceremony, when asked on Hitz FM about the speculation surrounding the award, Black Sherif smiled and said simply: “We deserve it, don’t you think?” He added, “My fans will be happy. And the award, if I want it, I want it for the fans. It is a validation for them. My own validation is in the music I compose.”
That quote tells you everything about why this win resonates beyond a trophy. It is not ego. It is gratitude, directed outward, toward the people who streamed the music at 2 am, who memorised every word of Second Sermon before the world had caught up, who filled that stadium in December. Black Sherif has always understood that his story is not really about him. It is about every young person in Ghana who needed to hear that survival is not the ceiling.
The Other Big Winners on the Night
Medikal secured Hiplife Song of the Year for Shoulder, Best Collaboration with Shatta Wale, and Hip-Hop Artiste of the Year. Kofi Kinaata won Highlife Song of the Year for It Is Finished and Highlife Artiste of the Year, while Stonebwoy retained his Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year title. Gospel singer Diana Hamilton was named Gospel Artiste of the Year, and veteran highlife icon Daddy Lumba received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Moliy gained international recognition, winning two honours, including International Collaboration of the Year for the remix of Shake It to the Max. For a Ghanaian female artist to win an international collaboration category at the TGMAs is historic, and it confirms that the 2026 chapter of Ghana’s music story is being written by more voices, more genres, and more stories than ever before.
What This Means Going Forward
Black Sherif’s latest victory places him among a select group of Ghanaian artists who have won the prestigious Artist of the Year title more than once, reinforcing his influence on the contemporary music scene.
- He is 23 years old.
- He has two Artist of the Year awards.
- He has a sold-out stadium concert to his name.
- He has an album that moved people on four continents.
The question is no longer whether Black Sherif belongs at the top of Ghanaian music; it is how long he intends to stay there.
Based on everything we have seen, the answer appears to be: indefinitely.
