MB Zonne on Upper West Music Challenges

MB Zonne Opens Up on Challenges Facing Upper West Musicians, Explains Move to Accra
Ghanaian upcoming artiste MB Zonne has opened up about the challenges confronting emerging musicians in the Upper West Region, citing financial difficulties, limited media exposure, inadequate event venues, and gaps in music business education as some of the major obstacles to their growth.
Speaking in an interview on Vive Central, the rising musician reflected on his musical journey, his decision to relocate to Accra, and the steps he is taking to strengthen his brand and advance his career.
Limited Exposure Remains a Challenge for Upper West Artistes
According to MB Zonne, the Upper West Region is home to many talented musicians, but the music scene continues to struggle with limited exposure beyond the region.
He explained that while artistes can build recognition locally, breaking into the national market remains difficult, partly because many of Ghana’s major media houses are based in Accra.
Beyond media exposure, MB Zonne identified the lack of suitable venues for concerts and other music events as another challenge facing musicians in the region.
He also pointed to the need for greater education on the business side of music, explaining that emerging artistes often concentrate on creating music without fully understanding the business knowledge needed to market and grow their careers.
MB Zonne Relocates to Accra to Take His Career to the Next Level
MB Zonne disclosed that he began releasing music around 2018 but only started pursuing it professionally more recently.
After completing school, he decided to move to Accra to position himself closer to the centre of Ghana’s entertainment industry and explore opportunities to grow his career.
The artiste acknowledged that his journey has not been entirely smooth, identifying finances, promotional opportunities, and industry connections as some of the difficulties he has encountered.
However, he remains focused on improving his craft, learning more about music marketing and branding, and investing in visuals and other activities that can increase his visibility.
New Collaborations and More Music on the Way
During the interview, MB Zonne revealed that some collaborations are in the works, although he chose not to disclose the names of the artistes involved.
He explained that keeping certain projects private allows him to surprise his fans when the time is right.
The musician also delivered an exclusive performance of his song “Adiza” during the programme, giving viewers an opportunity to hear the song in a live setting.
When asked about his songwriting process, MB Zonne explained that inspiration can come at any time, whether he is at home, in the kitchen, in the washroom, or out on the streets. He typically records musical ideas on his phone before developing them further.
His Message to Upcoming Musicians
Drawing from his experience in the industry, MB Zonne encouraged aspiring musicians not to abandon their dreams because of the challenges they face.
He advised upcoming artistes to remain patient, humble, and committed to learning, stressing that talent and passion must be accompanied by continuous growth and perseverance.
His reflections highlight the importance of creating more opportunities for regional artistes through improved media coverage, better performance infrastructure, and greater knowledge of the music business.
As MB Zonne continues to build his career from Accra, fans can look forward to his upcoming projects and the collaborations he has kept under wraps.
